road trip to Phillip Island, VIC

We went on a road trip to Phillip Island to watch the Australian round of the MotoGP. It seeeeeeeemed like a good idea. But, no. First, we had to drive all the way to Mascot to pick up this monster on wheels! It took 3 hours of paperwork and explanatory dvd watching to get out of there and we were finally on the road for the 11 hour journey ahead of us.

The kids were NOT happy in there. The back seats were so upright that they couldn't rest their little heads backwards, so every time they tried to fall asleep their heads would flop forwards. This meant stopping for some crazy-release time every. two. hours.
There was NO WAY either of us was willing to stop at Goulburn. We both feel sick to the stomach thinking about that place after the 4 months we each spent there.
So the first stop was a little park at Yass.

Next stop was The dog on the tuckerbox, 5 miles from Gundagai.
Brayden loves doggies.

We spent the night pulled over at a truck stop on the side of the Hume Highway. Very scary. I didn't get much sleep that night - I was laying there planning what I would do if somebody tried to get in to the cabin.
The next day we woke up to black clouds and rain. All day long.
I usually like the rain.

So we just took our time getting there. No rush since we definately wouldn't be going to the track in this weather.
But then Saturday rolled around with more of the same weather. The winds were soooo strong I was worried the motorhome was going to tip over. So Greg went to the track and met up with some people he knew and the boys and I parked at the beach and entertained ourselves.
There was playdo, colouring-in, Wiggles cards, pizza-pop, wind-up fishing, you name it.

Before long it was time to pick up Greg. We got pizzas and ate them watching tele then went for a walk around Cowes where all the crowds gather. Too cold to hang around for long so we went to the track and found a good spot to park for the night then let the wild winds rock us to sleep again.

The next day was race day. By now the track was so muddy and (to me) unappealing, so Greg took the boys for the warm up session then came back to the motorhome for lunch.

This is Liam's absolute favourite because it's orange and it's a Honda. They look a bit stunned but it's because they were so shy about standing there in front of a bunch of strangers.

Greg went back to the track alone for the race of the MotoGP class.
Go Stoner!!!!!

Go Rossi!!

My gorgeous boys up in the sleeping area.

It was good to have some family time together, but now I realise why it's been 9 years since we've been there. I'm pretty sure it'll be more than 9 years before we go back. And even then Greg, Liam and Brayden can make it a boy's trip.
I'm glad we did it too because the whole motorhome idea has been something we've been talking about for a long time and now I know it isn't for us. Many reasons, one of which is the cost. It would have been MUCH cheaper and more enjoyable to fly down, stay in Melbourne and hire a car to drive to Phillip Island. I'll remind Greg of that in (atleast) 9 years time.
